Lest we forget
As members of the Corps, we train to be a competent, confident and committed part of the Nation’s Defence. We do not wish to fight, but should the day come we are ready to play our part. With current world events in mind, perhaps this year is an especially important time for us all to remember the cost of war. It is simply not fun.
November 11th marks the Anniversary of the end of hostilities in 1918 for what was then known as The Great War. Over the last 105 years, this has become one of the significant dates chosen worldwide to remember and commemorate those of all nations and faiths that have laid down their lives on our behalf so that we may live the life we do.
Sadly, the peace only lasted 21 years and hence The Great War has now become known as World War One. World War Two was of course a very different story for the island of Singapore.
Every year (barring Covid), the Corps has been present, bright and early, at Kranji War Memorial to participate in the Remembrance Sunday commemorations and this year will be no exception.
This year’s event will be held on Sunday 12th November and those wishing to attend will need to be there by 0715h so that there are no late arrivals when ceremonies commence.
I know of 217 Volunteers that are remembered at Kranji from various units across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Following the completion of the formal ceremonies we shall lay a Wreath on behalf of the Members of the Volunteer Corps and we would like you to join us.
After this there are options…
Tea and cakes for all laid on by the British High Commission at the entrance to the grounds
A guided tour of the site arranged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
A Buffet Breakfast at Mediapolis ($20) arranged by The Veterans’ Society (car pooling can be arranged)
