The No.4 SAF uniform is a field uniform, designed for use in outdoor operations. Item
Be Competent Advice
Beret
Properly seasoned, badge over left eye, with 2.5cm gap. Stored in your left cargo pocket with cap badge facing outward.
Jockey Cap
Covers forehead until 2cm above eyebrow. Stored in right cargo pocket.
No.4 Top
Smart 4's with a 2.5 gap between top of cuff and formation patch holder. Top button undone.
No.4 Bottom
Excess leg fabric tucked away under garters, showing socks (unless deploying with safety boots for RSN).
Belt
Not required but good to have, especially for Buddy First Aid (e.g. makeshift tourniquet).
Socks
Green or black, depending on what was issued.
Garters
Make sure they are secured. (Not used when deploying with safety boots for RSN).
Combat Boots
Clean, brushed and polished. If you haven't worn them a lot recently, check for wear and tear. They are known to disintegrate without usage.
Formation Patch
Centred and not frayed.
Rank Slide
Make sure the SAFVC letters are visible at the bottom. Rank slide should be at the bottom of the holder.
First Aid Dressing
Keep this in your left leg cargo pocket.
ID Tags
Well, if anything goes down, you want them to be able to ID you, right?
SAFV9B (SAF11B)
Military ID. Usually needed for entry/exit to camp, drawing arms and food. Most SAF folk won't know what a SAFV9B, and will refer to it as the 11B.
Care for your uniform
To avoid mismatched top and bottom No.4’s, label each set with its own number. This makes sure that you wear and wash your uniform evenly.
